Technical Assistant (m/f/d) in Lung Immunology and Infection Research

The Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU) is looking for a highly motivated Technical Assistant (m/f/d) to join our research team in the field of Internal Medicine, Infectious Diseases and Experimental Pneumology.

This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge biomedical research focused on alveolar macrophages, the key immune cells that maintain lung homeostasis, coordinate inflammation, and protect the airways against pathogens. Our group investigates how the functional plasticity of these cells shapes immune responses in the lung, with the long-term goal of developing new therapeutic strategies for severe inflammatory lung diseases such as acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).

Your role

As a Technical Assistant, you will support a broad range of experimental activities in a collaborative and interdisciplinary research environment. Your work will include:

  • Assisting with animal experiments in infection models
  • Culturing mammalian cells, including 3D cell cultures/organoids, as well as viruses and bacteria
  • Performing cell culture infection assays and reporter assays
  • Conducting flow cytometry-based immunophenotyping and cell separation from human and murine samples
  • Applying histological methods, including the preparation of tissue sections
  • Carrying out molecular biology techniques such as PCR and DNA/RNA extraction, and preparing samples for sequencing
  • Supporting doctoral researchers with laboratory methods
  • Contributing to laboratory organization and data documentation

Your profile

We are looking for a candidate with a strong technical background in biomedical research and enthusiasm for working in a dynamic scientific setting.

You should have:

  • Completed professional training as MTA, MTLA, CTA, BTA, or a comparable qualification
  • Practical experience in biomedical experimental research
  • Strong skills in cell culture, ideally including primary cells and 3D organoid systems
  • Experience with flow cytometry, cell separation, and molecular biology methods
  • Willingness to assist with animal work in infection research
  • Ideally, knowledge of histology, sequencing sample preparation, and handling of biosafety level 2 pathogens
  • Very good German and English language skills
  • A reliable, organized, and team-oriented working style

What we offer

At JLU, you will become part of an internationally oriented research university with a strong commitment to scientific excellence, collaboration, and career development.
